The working principle behind a laser printer, while sophisticated, relies primarily on two fundamental concepts of physics: electric charge and heat.

The process begins with the laser itself. Inside the printer, a laser beam projects an image of the document you want to print onto a rotating drum. This drum is coated with a special material that can hold an electrical charge. The laser changes the charge on specific areas of the drum, effectively “drawing” your document as a pattern of static electricity.
Once the image has been formed on the drum using charges, the next step involves toner—fine, powdered ink. The toner is positively charged, and since the laser has created negatively charged areas on the drum, the toner is naturally attracted to these specific parts. As the drum rotates, it transfers the toner onto a sheet of paper that passes by.

At this point, the toner only sits loosely on the paper. This is where heat plays its crucial role. The paper is passed through a pair of heated rollers called the fuser. These rollers apply both heat and pressure, melting the toner so that it bonds permanently to the paper. This fusion process ensures the printout is durable and smudge-resistant.
